Police Warn Residents about Tragedy-Related Scams

BPD badge

The Branson Police Department is warning residents of potential scams and malware campaigns in the wake of the recent shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.

While the Police Department hasn’t had any reports of this happening locally, Police want to make sure the community is aware that it is happening and to be on the lookout for possible malicious cyber activity seeking to capitalize on these tragic events.

To avoid becoming a victim of malicious activity people should:

  • Exercise caution in handling emails related to the shootings, even if they appear to originate from trusted sources.
  • Be aware that fraudulent emails often contain links or attachments that direct users to phishing or malware-infected websites.
  • Know that emails requesting donations from fraudulent charitable organizations are also common after tragic events.
  • Be wary of fraudulent social media pleas, calls, texts, donation websites and door-to-door solicitations relating to these events.

If you wish to donate to any tragedy, police recommend seeking out a trusted and well-known charity or organization.

If any resident thinks they may have become a victim to this type of scam, call 9-1-1.
